Crime Report
The crime statistics included in the Report are obtained from reports of crimes occurring for three discrete categories: campus, non-campus buildings or property, and public property.
Campus means any building or property owned or controlled by a school within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area used by the school in direct support of or in a manner related to its educational purposes or property within the same reasonably contiguous area that is owned by the school but controlled by another person, frequently used by students, and supports the school’s purposes. The School of Designing Arts does not have a non-campus building or property which means any building or property owned or controlled by a student organization officially recognized by the school; and any building or property (other than a branch campus) owned or controlled by the school, that is not within the same reasonable contiguous area, is used in direct support of or in relation to SDA’s educational purpose, and is frequently used by the students.
Public Property means all public property including thoroughfares, streets, sidewalks, and parking facilities that is within the same campus or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This does not include, for example, highways that are adjacent to the campus, but that are separated from the campus by a fence or other man-made barrier.
SDA obtains reports of crimes from students, other persons and local law enforcement agencies. A formal police report or investigation is not necessary in order for a reported crime to be included in the crime statistics in the Report. All crimes reported in any calendar year will be included in the crime statistics included in the Report for that calendar year, regardless of the calendar year in which the crime actually occurred.
The School of Designing Arts does not have a campus or security department of any kind. SDA has no relationship with any state or local law enforcement agency and have no authority to arrest anyone. The School of Designing Arts’ students and employees, and others visiting SDA, whether victims or witnesses of crimes, are encouraged to voluntarily, promptly and accurately report all criminal activity to SDA officials and the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Students and others are directed to report occurrences involving crimes on SDA’s premises to the school director, or, in case she is not available, to any other SDA staff member. Upon receipt of any report of a medical or criminal emergency, SDA may offer to contact medical and/or security professionals for the persons affected. The method used to notify the campus community of the crime is dependent upon the nature of the crime and the immediate threat to personnel safety. Following a reported incident involving a crime, SDA may require the reporting student to confirm in writing the details of the crime and may contact and apprise local law enforcement agencies.
SDA does not have any policies or procedures that: allow victims or witnesses to report crimes on a voluntary confidential basis; or encourage pastoral counselors, if and when they deem it appropriate, to inform the persons they are counseling of any procedures to report crimes on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the crime statistics contained in the Report.
The crime statistics for each of three previous calendar years (beginning with 2008) are included in the Report. On or before October 1st of each year, the Report is distributed or made available to SDA’s students, prospective students, employees and prospective employees. Since SDA does not recognize, operate or sponsor any off-campus student organizations, SDA does not monitor or record through local law enforcement agencies any crimes occurring at off-campus locations of any student organization.
